Francis, who has made straight talk and simplicity a hallmark of his papacy, made his unscripted comments in answers to questions by four people at a huge international gathering of Catholic associations in St. Peter’s Square. But he outdid himself in passionately discussing everything from the memory of his grandmother to his decision to become a priest, from political corruption to his worries about a Church that too often closes in on itself instead of looking outward. “If we step outside of ourselves, we will find poverty,” he said, repeating his call for Catholics to do more to seek out those on the fringes of society who need help the most,” he said from the steps of St. Peter’s Basilica “Today, and it breaks my heart to say it, finding a homeless person who has died of cold, is not news. Today, the news is scandals, that is news, but the many children who don’t have food - that’s not news.

You know what? I’m not Catholic…but I’m really starting to like this new Pope.

The first thing he should do then is reform the rules regarding Christian Aid so they don’t just give to people that convert to Christianity or are already Christian in the third world. Red Cross, OXFAM and UNICEF don’t pull that shit. Also the fundamental problem with the global economy is the disproportionate amount of money in certain hands that is not going to the right people to develop their own communities, without restructuring the banking system properly the third world debt will remain if proper plans can not be instituted to minimise their debt, increase their GDP and in turn allow for proper education and infrastructure to develop in order for real social mobility and meritocratic equal opportunities to arise. However in turn that always leads to cultural degradation when people get a “The West Is Best” mentality which always leads to rebellion and sectarian violence. Unfortunately the same proponents of the Church capable of that are money minded first and foremost so unless the Pope can convince heads of state to write off huge amounts of money, something all the people behind Live Aid and Live 8 couldn’t do either, this will remain an issue for generations to come.

Oh, I completely agree. In fact, it could easily be argued that the Catholic Church has had a major hand in creating the global economic disparity. But in a very small way, I see this as a positive step forward, even if it is mere rhetoric. I believe that the Catholic Church CAN be a global force for good, education, the eradication of poverty, and human rights. But actions speak louder than words and the Catholic Church has a LOT of making up to do.

You know what? THE GREAT GATSBY wasn’t that bad.

I was really apprehensive about watching it, too. I’ve always thought that Luhrmann was a mediocre director…and, yeah, the art design was clearly the focus here. But Mulligan and DeCaprio give two phenomenal performances. It also got a lot of little details from the book right, like casting a “fuller” woman as Tom’s lover. Is it indulgent, misdirected, and occasionally miscast (I’m looking at YOU Maguire). But it’s also sincere. It’s an odd misfire from people who were actually trying. And I can respect that.

He is an acceptable non-threatening choice to appease white people who may not be willing to accept a character like Luke Cage. I’m confused how you’re a Tumblr blogger about films and fandom and yet you seem to think literally everybody was just fine with Benedict Cumberbatch playing Khan. You actually missed the entire ongoing backlash over that?

Anyway, even if I had no familiarity with the bloggers above and had never heard of or thought about this issue before (which does happen, when privileged folks live in a bubble) I would assume just based on the fact on that the folks above are objecting to the idea of casting a lighter skinned man as Luke Cage that they were also against the casting of Benedict Cumberbatch as Khan.

But you, you basically made up an opinion that would make them hypocrites and ascribed it to them so you’d have something to shake your head about.

We know at this point that you’re scandalized about the idea that someone can be “not Black enough” to play a certain role on the screen, but the reality is that movies get cast (or in some cases, shelved) because the people making them believe that some actors/characters are “too Black” for “mainstream America”. The conversation above is calling that out and pushing back against it, and to answer your question, it doesn’t seem to have been an argument before you joined in, and no, we shouldn’t be arguing about this.

(Note: I’m kind of guessing you’re white, because of the use of phrases like “genetically Black” and not having any idea that the casting of Khan was widely, roundly, and soundly criticized. If I’m wrong, I apologize for stepping across a line here, but if I’m right, then seriously, this is not our table.)

Yeah…I didn’t know that “colorism” was a real thing.

I am saying AS A LIGHT SKINNED BLACK PERSON that it is majorly fucked up for Dwayne Johnson ANOTHER LIGHT SKINNED BLACK PERSON to come along and take a role MEANT FOR A DARK SKINNED BLACK PERSON.

Hollywood has a LONG history of casting light skinned or racially ambiguous Black people over dark skinned Black people because they are less threatening and more acceptable to white america.

This possible casting is just one more incident of this happening recently, with another being Zoe Saldana playing Nina Simone, a real singer who was adamantly pro-Black women especially pro-dark skinned Black women like herself. Instead of casting a dark skinned actress to play her, they picked Zoe Saldaña, and then they put her in Blackface.

All of that because they did not want to pick someone dark skinned.

So if all you want to read into is that I’m being the big evil Blackness police because I am upset by the idea of Dwayne Johnson being Luke Cage? Fine, I’ll be that. Because it IS MAJORLY FUCKED UP that he is contributing to the erasure of dark skinned Black people like this.

I’m not trying to accuse you of anything!

I just think it’s messed up actors can be “not black enough.” It’s like when that one black group said that Barack Obama wasn’t “really black” back in 2007.
